Purpose:
For the final project you will choose a current topic in the field of Psychology and compile a collection of information regarding this topic. There are two main purposes to this assignment. The first is to collect interesting and fun information about this topic. The second is to compare opinions about this topic in popular culture to scientific research.
Instructions:
Look at the Example Project on Blackboard.
Choose a topic. This can be any topic covered in your textbook, so make sure it is something that sounds fun and interesting to you! You will state this topic in the form of a specific Topic Question. For example, the textbook discusses attachment theory. I could choose the topic of attachment in children, but that would be too broad. I should narrow it instead to a Topic Question like “Can caretakers engage in specific behaviors to increase the likelihood of secure attachments for children?”
Gather your information about the topic:
THREE links to interesting/fun videos that relate to your project. These can be news stories, home videos, online lectures from YouTube or Google Videos… the possibilities are endless!
FIVE links to internet information regarding this topic. These should include AT LEAST ONE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: 1) A forum, or discussion group dedicated to the topic (i.e., something that multiple people have contributed information or opinions to), 2) A blog, article, or personal website (i.e., one single person’s opinion – may or may not be accurate/reputable), 3) An article from a more reputable source such as Psychology Today, WebMD, the National Institute of Mental Health, the World Health Organization… again, the possibilities are endless! Please DO NOT use Wikipedia. I don’t have anything against them, I just would like to see more creative exploration of different sources.
TWO peer reviewed journal articles that give an overview of the topic from a scientific point of view. These articles must be obtained by the following steps
Go to the UNMLA library journal article database Website at: http://losalamos.unm.edu/library/online-resources/journal-magazine-article-databases.html (if you are on main campus, you will need to go to the main campus library webpage instead. Contact a main campus librarian if you need assistance with this).
Click on Academic Search Complete
If you are off campus, you will have to enter your UNM Net ID and password at this point, then you will be re-directed to the EBSCO Article Database.
Under “Limit Your Results”, select the Full Text and Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals checkboxes.
At the top of the page, enter your search terms (i.e. “create secure attachment”) and click on the Search button.
To read the articles, click on the PDF Full Text button. Find two that specifically answer the question you are asking in your midterm/final project. Save the full-text PDF file of these articles to your computer.
SUMMARIZE YOUR LINKS AND ARTICLES. Use the template provided on Blackboard in the Midterm and Final Project folder. Make sure you include all of the following information:
Your name, the class name, my name, the date, and your Topic Question.
1-3 sentences describing each of the 8 links you are including in your project.
A paragraph summarizing each of your two Peer Reviewed Journal Articles.
A 1-2 page summary and comparison of all of the information you have included. This should answer the following questions: 1) What does popular culture have to say about the topic? 2) What does scientific research say about the topic? 3) Do they agree or disagree? 4) Why do you think they agree/disagree? 5) And finally, based on all of this information, what is the answer to your Topic Question?
