Friendship
–
Write an essay that describes the meaning of friendship. Use examples from Where the Red Fern Grows as well as your personal life to prove your meaning.
Your essay should have:
A topic sentence
Discussion of at least two factors of a good friendship. For example, you could talk about loyalty and common experiences.
At least one example from Where the Red Fern Grows to support each factor
A citation, or page number, that someone could reference in the book. If you are giving a general summary of an event, you could reference the chapter number.
A conclusion sentence
Step-by-Step
Step 1
Choose Your Topic
Read through the essay prompts carefully and choose which one you are more interested in.
Step 2
Brainstorm Characteristics
Use a character map or a similar graphic organizer to help you brainstorm the characteristics you want to talk about.
You are either coming up with 2-3 characteristics of friendship or 2-3 characteristics of one of the characters.
Example: Mama — kind, compassionate, good mother, anxious about her children, strong for her family, competent, brave
Step 3
Narrow Your Topic
From your brainstorm, choose 2-3 topics you want to discuss. Choose the ones you know the most about or can think of examples for. You might be able to combine some of your brainstorm categories.
Example: I listed Mama as strong for her family AND brave. I can talk about both of these under a more generic title: “Courageous.”
Step 4
Find Your Evidence
Using your book, find evidence to support your observations. Write down the page numbers!
Example: Mama tells Papa she can stay home alone so he can go on the hunt with Billy (page 141).
Step 5
Start Writing
Being with your topic sentence. This will introduce the topic and main ideas you are talking about. Include your observations.
Example: In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy’s mother is a courageous and compassionate character.
NOTICE: I used the book title and introduced my main topic: Billy’s mother as a character. I also mentioned my two main observations: “courageous” and “compassionate.”
Step 6
Add Your Examples
Discuss each observation or characteristic in turn. Give your example from the text and a personal connection if you have one.
Example: In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy’s mother is a courageous and compassionate character. She is courageous when she allows Paper to go on the hunt with Billy. Even though she is pregnant and taking care of two little girls, she bravely volunteers to take care of the house by herself so that Billy can go with his father (141). She is also courageous when she allows Billy to go hunting, even though it scares her. She expresses many times that she does not like Billy being out by himself, but because she sees how much it means to him, she allows him to do it. This is brave because she is setting aside her personal desire in order to love someone else (62).
NOTICE: This paragraph goes in the same order that the topic sentence does, with courageous being discussed first.
The citations are the numbers in parentheses at the end of the relevant sentences.
The paragraph uses transition words, such as “also” and “because” to make the read smooth.
Step 7
Continue with Second Observation/Characteristic
You might start a new paragraph by saying something like:
“Secondly, Mama is compassionate” or “Mama is also compassionate.” or “The second factor that makes up a good friendship is….”
Step 8
Add Conclusion Sentence
Summarize your point quickly!
Example: Mama’s courage and compassion make her a wonderful character.
NOTICE: This conclusion sentence uses the main topics again.
