Planning your essay
An essay plan, where you identify the key sections of your assignment, is essential in achieving effective structure.
- Explore the data by looking for research. You need to use what you find in your reading to plan your essay. The attached template can help you you look at evidence.
- To construct the argument
- Identify the different positions (based on your reading and what is explored in the lectures and seminars)
- Identify the evidence (articles, reports, papers) that support/contradict these positions
- Identify the relationship between the positions
- How does this all this fit together to form a story that you can present?
Reviewing your essay
Make sure you review your essay to check it makes sense.
When you review the essay think:
- Does the introduction do its job of beginning the essay?
- Is the material organised logically?
- Does each paragraph have a clear focus?
- Are your arguments relevant?
- Are your arguments supported by relevant evidence?
- Have you reviewed the evidence critically?
- Have you answered the question that is set out in the essay?
- Does the conclusion work to end the essay?
Make sure you are not repeating things unnecessarily
Proofread your work for spelling, grammar and/or typing errors.
