Read The New York Times article, “Their Dangerous Swagger” by Maureen Dowd. Apply a social ecological analysis to the incident at Landon, referencing Stokols’ article on healthy environments and health promotion (1992). In doing so, carefully explore and discuss the environmental conditions at Landon. More specifically, what might we infer about the school’s social and cultural environment and why?
Referring to Table 3 (Envirogenic Processes in Health and Illness) discuss the five health-related functions of the socio-physical environment within the context of what happened at Landon. That is, how might sociocultural factors at the school compromise the health and safety of students? Focusing on the “social” dimension of the environment (Table 3), apply the first four environmental functions to the boys involved in the game and to the girls targeted by it. In other words, what are the potential health and safety risks for the boys and girls (NOTE: some risks will be the same despite gender differences, while others will differ between boys and girls). Next, discuss how the environment at Landon might also affect other students at the school not involved in the game, drawing from the ecological perspective. Finally, what health promotion and prevention initiatives might you employ in response to this case study? What degree or degrees of prevention (referring back to Module 1) should be implemented at the school, and using the social ecological framework, what would the desired outcomes be?
