- Sharing as much as you feel comfortable, what reactions are you experiencing while learning that the history of the mental health movement includes many -isms (for instance, racism, sexism, heterosexism, monoculturalism, etc.) and culturally encapsulated formulations in training programs? Feel free to revisit Chapter 1, as it may assist as you consider reactions and insights to share.
- Read the case of Daryl
- Discuss any initial reactions you might have to this case and explore any elements of ethnocentric monoculturalism?
- Explain your understanding of Social Justice Counseling and discuss how you would implement the principles of social justice counseling to the case of Daryl.
- Do you believe it is the role of counselors to engage in social justice work? Why or why not? What might make it difficult?
- Given your understanding now of historical oppression, cultural encapsulation, and ethnocentric monoculturalism, how or why do you think microaggressions occur in therapy (or in general for that matter)?
- Share a microaggression you have seen, experienced, or feel you might have committed (you do not have to disclose which applies). How might you address this once aware of it within yourself or within therapy? How might you address a client that feels you have expressed a microaggression toward them?
