I
feel as though Mass Culture is termed wrong, in my opinion. It was termed to
define all the cultures brought on by what the elites thought Mass Culture is,
meaning that anything that is not of the “high Culture” will fit in the
category of Mass Culture. “Mass Culture Theory is about taste and making it
explicit that elite culture should triumph and be privileged over massed
produced culture” (Eaton, 2020). “People look at mass-produced as
equaling less value” (Eaton, 2020). For something not to be considered Mass
Culture, it can not just be made by a push of a button.
With
today’s technology and the digital world, it takes to produce something
considered a work of art. However, to the high-class society, that does not
count. If someone takes the time to create a work of art, it should not be
deemed in one big class considered as Mass Culture”. Theories attempt to offer
and explain many different perspectives and aspects of the human cultures and
the social life they live on a greater spectrum.
Pop
Culture seems to fit the term Mass Culture because it is mass-produced. Mass
Cultures are the norms shared with experiences and meaning that span over a
very large group (Spacey, 2021). They are trying to put High Culture in
with the Mass Culture, and the elite does not want to be linked with the
middle-class citizens of the pop culture, which is also part of the Mass
Culture. “Popular culture can thus be argued to exist within the frame of
mass culture” (Gautam,2021).
