You will select one of the two scripts we read this week and write up a brief analysis of its structure and content by answering the questions below. You answers should be brief, but concise. You do not need to put your answers into paragraph form. The assignments should be at least two, but no more than five double-spaced pages. Your answers should refer to specific moments and/or lines from the play as examples/evidence for your assertions.
1. Describe the physical world of the play (Answer should be about 200 words):
What is space like in this planet? “Interior or exterior, built or natural?” Describe the physical space. How does time behave on this planet? Does “time stand still”? Is time frantic and staccato on this planet? Is it leisurely, easy-going time. Describe time in the play. What is the mood of the world of the play?
2 Describe the social world of the play (Answer should be about 200 words):
How does the social world of the play operate? Is it public or private sphere? What are the power relations between characters or characters and their world like? What kind of social power do the figures have? Who has power? Who does not have it?
3. What changes in this world? (Answers should be about 200 words):
Describe the very first stage image in the play. Describe the very last stage image. Then locate some striking image near the center of the play. Why was it essential to pass through the gate of the central image to get from the first to the last?
4 What changes in you? (Answers should be about 200 words):
What changes in you as you read the play? What significant emotional responses did you have? What new ideas or experiences did you learn about? What questions are you left pondering or troubled by?
