Analysis of Photographic images:
Choose one photograph,
1. either from past or current photojournalism or an advertisement, or
2. by a photographer listed on the Magnum (Links to an external site.) website, or
3. by a photographer on the booklist Download booklist (you do not have to find the book listed, just one of the photographers listed, as long as you choose a documentary/ photojournalistic image).
CREDIT THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND CITE THE SOURCE OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPH (copy and paste the exact URL if you got it from the internet– it should not be Google Images)
Embed your photo in your paper
as shown in the Sample Analyses on the Instruction Page.
Write 2-3 pages that thoroughly analyze the photos using the terminology you have learned in class:
Provide a denotation and a connotative interpretation of the image you have chosen. Analyze at least three of the eight photographic aesthetic devices we have discussed AND explain specifically how each aesthetic device affects the connotative message you take from the photograph: How does the lighting, composition, depth of field, camera position, framing, color/tonality, control of motion, etc… affect what and how the photo communicates. BE SPECIFIC!!! Additionally, discuss any social or cultural implications the photograph suggests.
***Advertisements must include a discussion of who you think the target audience is and why.
