What is the Assignment? Write a paragraph based on the CLAIM-EVIDENCE-COMMENTARY
What is the Assignment?
Write a paragraph based on the CLAIM-EVIDENCE-COMMENTARY method. Follow the example paragraph on the Anne Bradstreet poem “Here Follows Some Verses on The Burning of Our House.” (You don’t need to color-code yours!)
Use a T-A-G sentence to orient your reader to the poem you will be discussing.
Make a claim in the topic sentence which should be the first sentence of the paragraph.
Support that claim with at least 3 pieces of evidence from the poem.
Follow the claim, evidence, commentary style.
Try to introduce quotes in at least TWO different ways (signal phrases, stand-alone sentences, or blended quotes).
Finish your paragraph with a concluding sentence that wraps up or brings the paragraph to a close.
What poem should I write about?
Choose ONE poem from the following:
“To My Dear and Loving Husband” (p. 124)
“A Letter to Her Husband Absent upon Public Employment” (pp 124-125)
“In Memory of My Dear Grandchild” (p. 125)
“The Author to Her Book” (explained in the last video) (pp. 122-123).
What makes a good claim?
Remember, you are NOT summarizing what the poem is about. A good claim is not so obvious. It should be specific and logical. What do you notice about the poem that you would like to concentrate on? Here are some possibilities:
theme (for example: Bradstreet’s faith or the common concerns of women in all generations)
literary devices (such as metaphors, similes, extended metaphors, anaphora)
historical context (how does the poem exemplify Bradstreet’s Puritan context or life in colonial America)?
What style should I follow?
ALL papers for this course should follow MLA style. What does that include?
MLA header
MLA pagination
Double Spacing
Citations
Works Cited Page
How do I cite quotes from a poem?
Since you will only write about 1 poem, you will not need to do anything except put the line number in parenthesis after the quote. (Use the word “line” with the number for the first citation, and afterwards you can just use the number of the line. )
Do I need a Works Cited page?
Yes! Any time you write about a another person’s work, you need to include a Works Cited page. Refer to the handout given earlier in this module titled “How To Do Works Cited Entries.”
How will I be graded?
See the attached rubric.
