a) How exactly would you describe Marsh’s voice? Particularly at the end of the story: Is he at peace? Or is he still searching for answers? Or has he perhaps given up? To put those three options in different words: Has he found an answer to his conflict? Is he still looking? Or has he quit (resigned himself to messiness)? I’ve read the story many times, and I’m still not sure. You tell me what you think. Use the text to support your claims.
b) Quote any line or passage from the essay and create some argumentative tension around it. Do it like this: Say what your bit of text suggests to you on a first reading. Then talk about what you see on a deeper reading. Make claims strong enough that someone could disagree with them. I want you to open up the line or passage and explore its ambiguity, which means its absence of exactness. The ambiguity is what makes a text rich and lets you read it your way.
c) What’s Marsh’s overall purpose or thesis? According to you. What’s he saying to you? Again, create argumentative tension: “His message might appear to be X . . . but to me he’s saying Y because . . . . ”
