”Court Watch Harris County
is a pilot project of the Harris County Public Defender’s Office and the
University of Houston’s Laboratory for Crime and Justice.
We will recruit, train, and support
volunteers in observing and reporting whether Harris County Criminal Court
judges, prosecutors, and public defenders are doing their jobs transparently,
ethically, and constitutionally.
Court Watchers will record their
observations on paper, which will then be uploaded to a UHD database where we
will aggregate the data and compare a court’s operation to national best
practices. This ensures our public officials are held accountable for their
day-to-day decisions and actions, a basic tenant of American democracy.
