Throughout the semester we have encountered themes and motifs that recur about home,
community, and place within the poetry and short stories of these amazing Black writers. It is
evident that for each home, and place means something different to them such as identity,
connections to community, belonging, etc.
• Themes are the main ideas of a work of literature.
• They represent the meaning or question behind the series of events that make
up the narrative.
• Motifs are recurring elements that point to these themes.
• In other words, motif is a tool used to craft theme (a literary device).
• While themes are abstract and conceptual, motifs are tangible and concrete (a
quilt, a person of the past, etc.)
