Think of an occasion when you found yourself in an ethical dilemma. Either you were involved centrally or were a by-stander or were brought into the situation by another. You do not need to identify the company or the names of individuals. The situation could have occurred in business (profit or non for profit), government, professional associations, family, education, church – religion, spouse, children, friends etc.
Describe the situation; relate the story/incident. Who was involved: What happened? How did the situation get created: How did you get involved?
Why was this situation an ethical dilemma for you or another?
What ethical principal was violated: What was being challenged or what went wrong?
Which underlying value, norms, assumptions, promises, and/or codes of conduct were broken that created the ethical dilemma?
How serious of an ethical issue was the dilemma?
What was at stake or at risk?
What action did you take to resolve the dilemma or how was the dilemma eventually resolved – what was the outcome?
What learning did you gain because of this experience? What would you do differently if a similar situation occurred today? Why or why not?
How do these experiences affect your future code of behavior, interactions with others and your personal relationships? Does this provide a clear foundation for your personal bias and mental models?
In your summary, please consider and discuss how the culture of the organization or group, has the leadership (or others) helped or hurt this situation? Did the main characters correct the situation quickly? Did the employees feel they could state their case to management (or others) without fear of punishment? Would this situation have been different had it been in another arena (Business/church/family)?
Be sure to use and cite some of the materials from this week in your analysis and discussion.
