The assignment is the following:
Describe your coaching approach stating which models and / or theories inform your practice. Please include how these models or theories have helped to develop your coaching; how the models have challenged your coaching experience and what learning you have gained by applying these models or theories to your coaching practice. Please cite appropriate academic sources to support this reflective review.
Here is my essay:
Significant cornerstones of my coaching practice are the GROW model (Whitmore, 2009), SMART (Doran, 1981), the cognitive behavior approach, and the drama triangle theory (Karpman, 1968).
When I began my coaching practice, I started by applying classic coaching models like GROW and SMART. I still use those models as a general frame for the coaching session, but I discovered that often, the main client’s obstacle to the desired outcome lies deep in their emotional level. I struggled to help my clients overcome psychological barriers until I discovered the cognitive behavior approach (CBA).
CBA mainly originates in cognitive behavior therapy by Beck (1976) and rational emotional behavioral therapy by Ellis (1955). In my work, I utilize this approach to help my clients identify and cognitively process unproductive beliefs and behavioral patterns, expose and reshape negative thinking, and discover alternative views and behaviors. Many of my clients find that method incredibly impactful in their self-confidence and goal achievement.
Inspired by the success of working with the CBA, I threw myself into the work, armed with powerful tools and wanting to help clients as much as possible. As I took more responsibility than I should while working with clients, I noticed a decrease in clients’ performance and satisfaction from sessions.
I realized that my desire to save everyone is not a noble goal but rather a symptom of a “triangled coach” (O’Neill, 2007). I began to study Karpman’s drama triangle theory in more detail to understand the dynamics better and overcome my rescue model. Now I can notice clients’ triangles and work more efficiently, helping them take responsibility and believe in their resourcefulness.
Overall, those are the core models and theories underlying my practice at the moment, but I am constantly learning and looking for other techniques to implement in my coaching work.
I’d like it to sound a little more academic and advanced in terms of vocabulary, but it has to be no more than 300 words.
