Activity:
Machine Learning (ML)
Activity: Use ML for Gaining
Behavioural Awareness
ML Activity:
Possible Solutions (1/2)
1. ML is… computers use algorithms to analyse huge data
sets, then use the patterns they identify to learn how to
make accurate predictions or produce certain outcomes. ML
systems constantly absorb new data and test their learning
to continuously improve the accuracy of their predictions
and outcomes.
2. ML can help gaining behavioural awareness …
by gaining real-time insights, improve relationships with
customers, increase sales, understand customers’
emotions, personalise offer/ads

Possible Solutions (2/2)
3. A case where ML has been used for gaining
behavioural awareness is… Affectiva that uses ML
to assess individual’s emotional state. It was used during
the 2017 Super Bowl to evaluate the most impactful ads.
4. Challenges posed by ML are… data protection and
cybersecurity, ML takes time for producing high quality
insights, ethical aspects, large database needed to reduce
bias.

Activity:
Internet of Things (IoT)
Activity: Use IoT for Gaining Situational
Awareness
Activity: Possible
Solutions
1. IoT is… The concept of connecting any device to the internet and other
connected devices to share data, communicating with each other and users
for both consumer and industrial purposes. Connected devices are made up of
four key elements: physical objects equipped with sensors, a connection to the
internet, cloud-based servers with data processing ability and user interaction
(i.e. humans using the devices). When users interact with a connected device,
data is collected and processed by sophisticated algorithms that send a result
or response back to the device.
2. IoT can help gaining situational awareness… by tracking,
controlling and efficiently managing maintenance processes, supply chains,
quality checks, regulatory compliance, energy consumption, transportations,
fleet of equipment, logistics etc.
Activity: Possible
Solutions
3. A case where IoT has been used for gaining situational
awareness is… UPS uses sensors in its trucks to optimise
driver efficiency throughout the day, saving millions of
dollars per year in time and fuel efficiencies.
4. Challenges posed by IoT are… data protection and
security regulations are not the same worldwide, devices
have to be switched on in order to be connected,
compatibility between different systems/platforms
