ECE206 Science and Environmental Education in Early
Childhood (Three to Five Years)
Assessment 2: Lesson Plan
Assessment 2 requires students to design lesson plans that include four (4) science-based learning
experiences across the four (4) science learning areas – these are biological science, physical science,
earth science, and environmental science. In other words, students are to create one science-based
activity for each science learning areas. One of the lesson plans must include science-based activity
within the natural environment and/or discoveries in science/environmental science.
Students will describe the Scientific Areas of Exploration and highlight the scientific learning
possibilities within the area for each lesson plan. Students will also convey through the lesson
objectives surround the scientific content areas of exploration for investigation, the scientific learning
possibilities, and the science process skills to be developed in each of the science learning areas.
Including the description of the procedures (delivery of instructions), reflecting specifically what
equipment/resources will be utilised, discuss the teaching strategies they will use, their role as
Educator, what open-ended questions they will ask the children, methods of assessing the learning and
development/experiences, and how they will review their lesson and extend children’s learning
moving forward.

How to Prepare Lesson Plan
There are eight key steps to developing a lesson plan, these need to be considered when developing
your plan:
1. Learners: What are the academic, social, physical, personal, and emotional needs of my
learners?
2. Strategies: Which teaching strategies will best facilitate my learners’ learning?
3. Grouping: Should I group strategies in a heterogeneous or homogeneous manner? What size
should my groups be?
4. Timing: When is the best time to do this lesson? Are there prerequisites my learners should
have mastered?
5. Materials: What materials and human resources do I need for the lesson to be successful?
6. Success: Was the lesson successful? Were my learners interested? Did my learners learn?
What didn’t work? What will I do differently next time?
7. Sequence: What can I do next to build upon this lesson? How can I make it flow?
8. Rationale: What is the reason for doing this? What objectives will be accomplished?
In your lesson plans, you should cover information include:
• Your name, your student ID
• Current Unit Code and Name
• The Science Learning Area and Title of your lesson plan (e.g., Growing Seeds)
• Children Age level
• Lesson Duration
• Grouping (small group/whole group, if small group, how many children)
• Location
• Scientific Areas of Exploration → scientific learning possibilities
• Lesson Objectives
• Children’s Prior Knowledge
• Resources/Materials
• Description of Procedure
• Selected Teaching Strategies/Approach
• Educator’s Role
• Open-ended Questions
• Methods of Assessment/Evaluation
• EYLF outcomes (provide rationale)
• Future Planning – Children’s Extended Learning and Development

Please use the Science-based Experience-Plan template provided.
The information needs to be clearly presented so that it could be understood by other educators and
the lesson delivered successfully.
