songwriters you anticipate signing to your publishing company, indicate the
method you will employ to collect your mechanical income and at what point you
might consider switching to an alternative method. Be sure to also consider how
to collect mechanical income outside of your own territory. Taking into account
the way in which your music will likely be sold, the amount of licenses you
will need to grant, and the costs of each different collection option, explain
your reasoning.
Assignment 11.2: Choose a Performing Rights Society
If you’re a songwriter, let’s start
thinking about which performing rights society you will choose to join (if you
haven’t already). Consider your previous list of local activities or services
provided by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC,
or your local PRO, as well as the differences in the way each society
calculates earnings. Also think about the history of each organization and your
relationships with the writer representatives. Which will you choose? Discuss
your reasoning. If you are already a member of a performing rights society,
discuss your reasons for that choice.
As a publisher, will you choose to join your local PRO or to
collect through a PRO in a different country? Explain why, indicating which
territories you expect to have the most activity for your music, and the
merits, or drawbacks, to your local society.
