Respond to two colleagues in one
or more of the following ways, taking care to maintain respect, not debate a
colleague’s morals, and be respectful of others:
·
Suggest other options a
colleague may have to resolve the situation ethically.
·
Suggest an alternate way
to view the ethical conflict.
·
Suggest possible
resources a colleague could access to help resolve this situation.

Discussion 1
This
week’s discussion asks that we describe a situation where our own personal and
moral values could be in conflict with our professional ethical obligations.
This question takes me back in time when I basically had little or no clue
regarding ethics, lacked extensive job experience in this arena, there was a
very high turnover for this agency and like many of my colleagues we were
overworked and underpaid. To say the least I was dismissed from this position
due to my own personal values and ignoring my professional ethical obligations
by assisting a previous resident who had aged out of state custody by allowing
temporary residence at my home. My personal concerns to see a young person who
had no ability to manage life outside of the walls of an all inclusive facility
and stepping out with an ongoing criminal record was difficult for me to watch
but my actions were seriously wrong and unethical based on the codes
established by the agency.
The position I held was in
direct services to youth with criminal and/or mental health within a
campus-like setting that offered comprehensive services that included but was
not limited to education, medical, counseling, lifeskills, activities and
treatment services. The agency held a principal-based focus that emphasized
universal principles that were outlined in codes of ethics. We were trained
regarding these ethics during a one day seminar and then set free into an
environment that gave priority to ensuring that the youth were treated equally
but ignored all individuals’ circumstances, structural constraints and
emotions.
Today
as a consultant and with a considerable amount of tools in my belt I would
address this situation from a situated/relational approach that puts much more
emphasis on the specific importance of context, history, and community. More
specifically, I would lean in to senior directors in the agency, look to
ethical standards for human service professionals and consult with specific
advisors in this field. The goal would be to tailor a plan that would meet the
needs of the youth being served by building a plan with a team of advisors and
packaging a host of resources that can usher him/her into an environment that
offers support and sustainability. This plan would include continued
assessment of the client’s situation giving service providers the ability to
inject necessary resources and make adjustments.Within this approach there is
more focus on equity, rather than equality.

Jessica Discussion 2
Describe
a situation where your own personal and moral values could be in conflict with
your professional ethical obligations.
A
situation which I come across often in my profession working with youth is
parents making choices that I disagree with but aren’t necessarily considered
abusive. I usually try to manage this by engaging the parent and
supporting/educating them to make better choices or connecting them with
appropriate resources for further support outside my realm of expertise but
some parents just aren’t receptive to this. In these cases, I have to let
parents parent in the way that they see fit for their child and I have to
maintain the ethical standard 7 which is “Human service professionals ensure
that their values or biases are not imposed upon their clients.” (NOHS, 2015).
In these cases, I also consult my administration or peers to see how they would
handle the situation which is in line with standard 28 “Human service
professionals seek appropriate consultation and supervision to assist in
decision-making when there are legal, ethical or other dilemmas.” (NOHS, 2015).
Lots of times, my administration will also develop a plan to meet the needs of
the youth that aren’t being met by the parent to increase protective factors in
the youth’s life so they still get the care they need.
