Reflections on “People Skills” by Robert Bolton
Read Chapter’s 1-4 pages 1-61 and write a 250-300 words for each question.
In People Skills you will read about barriers to communication. Over the next week, pay attention to a conflict you or someone close to you is in. Drawing from your reading ,write, about the “communication spoilers” that have contributed to this conflict.
In People Skills you will read about listening skills. Different types of listening are presented. Write about the type of listening you must often utilize in your daily life. What is the purpose of your listening? Do you listen differently with different people?How? What kind of listening do you prefer from the people close to you?
Choose a person who is difficult for you to speak with and have a reflective listening conversation with them. Describe the conversation. How did it go? It is up to you if you prefer to ask the person to help you practice at a given time, or if you simply want to try your active listening in a usual conversation. Your challenge: Just listen and stay with the person-do not problem solve, do not evaluate, do not give advice, do not agree or disagree. Paraphrase and mirror, and when appropriate you may ask OPEN-ended questions.
