Purpose Use
The purpose of this assignment is to explore the different forms of public history and their power to engage with public audiences. You will access different approaches to public history and then research a case study for some of the larger historical themes we explore in the class. In particular, you will explore how events depend on context (which means that nothing in history is inevitable), how your events reflect the emergence of globalization, and how cultures intermingle, meld together, and on occasion clash too.
Skills
For this project, you will assess different public history approaches. You will identify their strengths and weaknesses, and then construct a public history project that reflects the strengths of your chosen medium. You will also conduct research, evaluate sources, and write a persuasive historical argument that you will then capture in your public history project.
Knowledge
This assignment will help you become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline:
Context
The history of globalization
Theories related to cross-cultural connections
Public History approaches
Task
Your task is two- fold. First, evaluate the pros and cons to the different forms of public history and then select which form of public history you will create for this class (see “Appendix 1: 3 Forms of Public History” below). Second, you need to conduct research on one of the options
Context: Provide the necessary contextual information for understanding your particular topic.
Globalization: Globalization is the network of connections around the world resulting in the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. It is the movement and integration of goods, people, and other parts of the environment among different countries. How does your topic evidence globalization?
Cross-Cultural Context: How does your topic help us to understand how different cultures come together, mix together, or clash against each other?
