A paraphrase is information that is taken from the text and described in your own words. For example, in the South during the Reconstruction Era, many whites resisted civil rights reforms and committed various acts of violence towards African Americans, including whippings, beatings, and shootings (467). Remember, even if you state the information in your own words, it still needs to be cited.

A direct quote takes the exact wording from a text and restates in within “quotation marks”. For example, “White witnesses refused to acknowledge what they knew to be true, white judges dismissed cases involving black defendants, and white juries invariably acquitted the offenders” (467). Notice how the period goes after the parenthetical citation for both citation styles. I prefer paraphrases instead of direct quotes because I want you to write in your own words. You should only use a direct quote when the words are very meaningful to your argument. Do not use more than two direct quotes for this assignment.
