Psychology – Describing a non-felony, abnormal behavior

Current Events Paper

The assignment is to write a typed paper describing a non-felony, abnormal behavior from a current news story (within the last year, USA). News magazines, newspapers, Internet news stories, etc., are all acceptable sources for this paper. A copy of the article (or link to it) must be included with the paper. This is NOT a research article and therefore does not have to be referenced or cited in APA style.

The paper must include:

A brief description of the news story

A description of what makes the behavior abnormal (using the three criteria for abnormality?discussed in class). You must make the case that this story meets all three criteria!

Psychological dysfunction

Distress or impairment
Atypical or culturally unexpected behavior
An explanation of the behavior from ONE of the perspectives in modern psychopathology.

The Biological perspective (including genetic, neurological, and physiological factors)
The Sociocultural perspective
The Psychological Perspective (choose one of the following)
Psychodynamic approach
Behavioral (or Cognitive-Behavioral) approach

Humanistic approach
The Supernatural perspective
In other words: Tell what happened, why it is considered abnormal, and how a modern psychologist would explain the behavior.
