Professor Directions:
For your final assignment, you will be required write a 7-8 page essay exploring the intersections of Religion, Nature, & Social Hierarchies. The paper should be double-spaced, 1” margins, with 12 pt. Times New Roman font. These papers are due on the day of our final exam (see course schedule below). Late papers will not be accepted.
This final paper will give you the opportunity to go beyond our syllabus and explore a certain topic in greater depth. Your research topic should relate to our intersecting explorations of religion, nature, and social identities/hierarchies (e.g., gender, sex(uality), race, animality, etc), but should dig deeper into the intersection of a selection of these topics.
Topics could include (but are not limited to):
– researching a particular ecospiritual community, movement, or group, whether from history or today, and how they have used ideas regarding religion and nature/environment to address social issues.
– researching the social history of an ecological crisis or event, and how religion and social hierarchies jointly played a factor in its causation or aftermath
– exploring a particular text or film that discusses the intersections of religion, nature, and social hierarchies.
– examining the ways some of our course themes of religion, nature, and social hierarchies are presented in the media.
My thesis for the essay: (Of course, please make the thesis better in any way possible, you have free rein based on the directions. However, please do stay within the realm of Cahokian culture for the essay)
In my essay, I plan to discuss the Cahokians and their impressive yet disastrous fall when dueling religious ideals and the environment within their society.
While Cahokia is by far the most impressive city to emerge north of the Rio Grande pre-European expansionism, it is also the most devastating relapse of any Native American society. Cahokia’s greatest fault was its overambition in its interaction between its people and the environment.
Below is my outline that I submitted to my professor (bolded is main points, and anything below falls under that umbrella. Like I stated before, if you use my ideas great! But if you can write something better, even better!
-The rise of Cahokia
– The city of Cahokia
– Cahokians
– Religion and the enviorment
– The Emerald Mounds
– Overuse of resources
– Agriculture
– Deforestation
– Water causeways
– Devastation
-Natural disastor
I hope this makes sense, if not we will be in contact and work this out together.
