The Gilded Age initiated a widespread debate about poverty and inequality and what should be done about them. Read the following two excerpts to explore three of the most popular arguments on the topic. Address each of the following THREE prompts with 1-2 paragraphs (at least 200 words per prompt). Your answer should have three parts: (1) your short answer (that is, one or two sentences in which you directly address the prompt), (2) specific evidence to support that short answer (references to specific passages, quotes, etc., that help you make your case), AND (3) analysis of that evidence that speaks to the prompt.

Then write at least 200 words in which you grapple with the following prompt:

Sumner and George have very different views on the issue of poverty. Compare and contrast Sumner’s and George’s ideas about the causes of poverty and inequality.
