Although it’s not necessary to answer each question under each type of response, you should at least cover each category of analysis. But these should help give you an idea.
►WRITER ANALYSIS (10 pts.):
Who is the rhetor(s), author(s) or composer(s)? (Give us a short bio on your author(s))
What is the rhetor’s background? Is he/she affiliated with any group or organization?
What are the rhetor’s sources of information? Are they valid? Are they biased?
►PURPOSE ANALYSIS (10 pts.):
What is the rhetor’s purpose in composing? Does the rhetor state his/her purpose?
Does the writer seem to have a hidden agenda? Is it biased in any way? Is it objective?
What does it say? What is it about? (This should NOT be the majority of your analysis)
Describe the tone of the piece: serious, humorous, ironic, angry, fearful, sarcastic, etc.; then ask yourself how does this fit the purpose?
►AUDIENCE ANALYSIS (10 pts.):
Who are the readers/viewers/listeners the rhetor was aiming for? How do you know?
What level of formality is the author using? Informal, formal, standard language? Why?
What are the main rhetorical appeals being used? Ethos, pathos, logos?
Why did the author choose those types of appeals to reach this audience?
►CONTEXT ANALYSIS (10 pts.):
What kairotic element happened to cause this piece to be written?
What social, economic, political or cultural events triggered this piece?
What was the motivation behind it? What historical references situate this piece?
