Survey research collects qualitative and quantitative data elements, but survey research may be complex due to the error rates within survey results. Information provided during a survey is subjective and relies on responses from the individual. Answers are from their perspective and may not accurately reflect the population but rather their perception based on their needs and views. Another obstacle is that surveys may lack clarity and are subject to interpretation if the intentions of the questions are not clearly expressed.
Agencies often utilize surveys in public policy to gain insight into a population’s perspective. Surveys allow public agencies to perform needs assessments for the region. Assessing the needs enables the division to plan and prepare projects based on the results. For example, in 2020, the County of Riverside performed a point-in-time count that utilized volunteers to survey individuals within the region experiencing homelessness. The survey results indicated that the population increased compared to the prior year (County of Riverside, Continuum of Care, 2020).
The study addressed limitations within the research, including that surveys were limited based on participation and timeframe limitations. However, the study was valid because it utilized various research methodologies to ensure that the results reflected the information collected from the population. Additionally, when I review a study, there is always the consideration that an error rate of results must be factored into all responses. There will always be limitations within studies, but identifying and considering challenges allows for the opportunity to improve future studies and ensure that information is presented as accurately as possible.
