Please read chapters: Chapter 4 (Verbal Communication) and Chapter 6 (Non-verbal communication).
Objectives and Overview: Identify and analyze your experience with culture and non-verbal communication.
Assignment 4 Instructions:
Question One – Either (a) Describe in detail an experience where your nonverbal behaviors violated a cultural custom or, (b) identify nonverbal behaviors customary/accepted where you live, and how these could violate a custom in another region of the U.S. or internationally. Choose either a or b, not both.
Based upon chapter six, describe two channels (or codes) of nonverbal communication which you experienced – write two short paragraphs (approximately 15-25 sentences per paragraph–one for each of the 2 channels). Examples of channels/codes are Kinesics (body language, posture, gestures, smiling, fidgeting), Facial expressions (anger, sadness, surprise, fear, disgust, happiness etc. to show emotions), Oculesics (eye contact), Vocalics (voice), Chronemics (time as communication), Haptics (touch as communication), or Proxemics (space as communication)–see pp. 84-88 in our textbook.
Question Two – Think of an example where you used ineffective nonverbal communication. Maybe you pointed the wrong way, dressed inappropriately (e.g. dressed informally to a formal event or vice-versa), rolled your eyes or smirked in a conversation, came in late for a meeting or arrived late to a date, etc. What could you have done differently to make the communication more effective, both in the setting and in future conversations? Analyze how the ineffective nonverbal impacted that conversation (what happened because of it?) and how it could affect future conversations with that person.
Write a reflection in about one to two paragraphs. Examples of concepts you should use in your reflection are substituting, contradicting, regulating, complementing, and repeating on p.82. You may also apply gender differences, media influence, or social structure from p. 90. Please be specific. Vague answers will lose points.
