1. After much assessing, I have come to think that non-consequentialism is a more appropriate type of moral reasoning than the other. Moreover, when we believe in non-consequential, we evaluate every detail of a situation differently and consider every aspect and factor in every situation that requires serious decision-making depending on the specific nature of the event. This makes this approach align with how a critical thinker acts in every given situation. Because outcomes of action are beyond our control and inevitable, I see things as we must not pass judgment based on something out of our control. In some way, we have to weigh the negativity with the positivity and see which outweighs the other to come to a firm conclusion.
A straightforward example is the idea of a very famous politician or celebrity donating to charity. A Consequentialist will surely think that when a politician or a celebrity donates a considerable amount of money to prove they have that large amount, they have done a good deed. However, with a non-consequentialist approach, our goal is to dig deeper beyond the reasons why a person like a politician or a celebrity would donate such money. In our thinking, there may not be any ethical intention behind the cause because underlying reasons have not been uncovered. As non-consequentialists, we like to understand an action’s motive further because a sense speaks more volumes and is more substantial and meaningful than just plainly seeing a result of an effort.
2.The most reasonable theory in my opinion is utilitarianism which is apart of the consequentialist theories. I think both of the theories are the most reasonable to me. Utilitarianism is, “The moral position that if an act will produce more happiness than its alternatives, that act is the right thing to do, and if the act will produce less happiness than its alternatives, it would be wrong to do it in place of an alternative that would produce more happiness” (Moore, B and Parker, R 2021). I find this the most reasonable because I do apply this to my life. For me, the right thing to do in most situations depends on how it will affect my happiness and peace. All in all, I am going to protect my happiness and peace above all else so doing the right thing to protect myself is what I am going to do. Utilitarianism is producing the most happiness out of a situation. Yes, some decisions maybe very hard to make, but in the long run if it will make one happier in the end then I believe that decision was the right thing to do.
