Part Three (15 marks, 3-4 pages)
Read the ‘Giver of the Law’ and ‘The Incest and Suicide of Handsome Young Tieng’ in ‘Readings on Incest’ (available on D2L) and ‘Unforgiven’ (available at: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5497517).
Compare and contrast the treatment of crime in egalitarian (‘Giver of the Law’), complex (‘The Incest and Suicide of Handsome Young Tieng’), and state (‘Unforgiven’) societies using the example of inCest.
Example questions to answer: What sort of punishment was meted out? What kind of stigma was attached to the perpetrators and for how long? How did the incident affect the perpetrators’ views of themselves? In all three examples both parties were consenting, so if there are no victims, why is this behaviour being punished by the larger communities?
Part Four (15 marks, 3-4 pages)
Watch the following three videos:
I. On Gangs – El Salvador

II. On Gangs – New Zealand

III. On Gangs – Poland

After watching all the videos choose one to focus on. Using the criminological theories and ideas we have examined so far including Chimp Crimes–explain the social unit of ‘gangs’ in sociological terms. Bring in similarities from the other two videos to support your arguments. You may also use sociological theories you are using in other classes but this is optional.
Example questions to answer: Why do gangs keep forming in societies across the planet? What is the social purpose of gangs? How do they maintain their membership? How do they use or channel violence and aggression? How do they relate to the larger society and environment they exist within?
