An operational plan is a detailed plan or document that is designed to paint a clear picture of how a specific team will contribute and work towards achieving an organisation’s strategic goals, mission, vision, and values.  Outlining who does what, when and how, the plan sets out the daily tasks and makes sure each manager and employee knows their specific tasks and obligations.

Here is a summary of the operational plan for the Business Development Team:

Drawing on the organisation’s mission, vision and values, the Business Development Manager and team objectives are

    • to grow the client base
      • every working day, a business development team member sets up appointments with existing clients and/or leads and visits them.  Using interpersonal skills to establish a relationship with clients and leads, the Business Developer grows sales and contacts.
    • to foster loyalty from established clients
      • the business developer recognizes the importance of personal integrity, ethical conduct and professional competence in achieving this and builds relationships based on trust.
    • to represent the organisation in the media and in the community
      • the BDM (Business Development Manager) oversees community outreach programmes, fundraising and charity events to ensure that the organization is represented positively in the media and wider community
      • builds relationships with media contacts.
    • to engage in professional development activities and industry and professional networks and groups.  the business developer:
      • uses some professional time to network with other leaders and industry professionals
      • attends industry talks and lectures
      • attends expos and trade shows.
    • to set and aim to achieve personal objectives and work program outcomes.  These include:
      • setting personal goals to become more efficient, productive and motivated
      • setting a good example for the team, encouraging them to emulate BDM behaviour and set their own goals
      • building strong connections with the team
      • developing active listening and interpersonal skills
      • finding more efficient processes and systems at work
      • being adaptable and overcoming challenges
      • assessing and evaluating own skills periodically.

A member of the Business Development Team has proposed a community outreach opportunity at a team meeting. Golden Years – local aged care centre is keen for D&N Printing to both sponsor and contribute to a Fundraiser for the centre leading up to Christmas.  The holiday period was chosen because there are many more visitors to the centre at this time.  The team agree that this is a good fit for a printing business, a very worthwhile event and set about planning the project.

However the Christmas timing does pose a problem.  D&N Printing usually closes up shop for approximately 10 days over the holiday period.  As the Business Development Manager, you are going to need your interpersonal and leadership skills to get some team members on board and help with this project, part of which will run right up to Christmas Eve – three days after the print shop closes for the holiday break.

You run a brainstorming session with your multi-skilled team to introduce the project and to ask everyone for ideas for it.   Here’s the result:-

  • Firstly everyone agreed that it was a very worthwhile cause and that it would be a privilege to help the centre.
  • To raise the funds, D&N Printing would produce and print calendars, Christmas card sets and blank card sets.
  • The printed items are to be promoted on the Golden Years and D&N Printing‘s websites and social channels.
  • All of D&N Printing’s clients as well as all of the Golden Years Aged Care Centre’s mailing list are to be offered the card sets and calendars as well as the opportunity to support the fundraiser
  • A media release is to be written and distributed so that news of the event is covered in local print.
  • The online promotions are to be run using the websites and mailing lists of both D&N and Golden Years.
  • There is to be a booth at Golden Years for two weeks each evening up until Christmas Eve, which is to be manned by two Business Development staff.
  • On Christmas Eve, there will be a Christmas Carol Choir to close the event.

Your task is to assign accountabilities to your team according to each member’s competencies. Download this Fundraising Project Operational Plan  Download Fundraising Project Operational Plan. Refer to the skills sets within as well as to the organisational charts for both the business and the business development team above to complete the template.
