NU 726 Unit 1: Discussion: Partnering to Promote a Culture of DEI

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) recognizes the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion for nursing professionals, students, and schools, asserting that diversity is one of the most critical building blocks of a healthy practice and work environment. The third guiding principle of AONE asserts that healthcare organizations should partner with nursing schools, universities, and other entities that provide education to healthcare workers to develop and implement policies, procedures, programs, and learning settings that lead to and embed the recruitment and retention of a diverse student population that mirrors the diversity of the United States.

Under the third guiding principle, the selected topic entails organizations creating a clinical rotation environment to support diversity among nursing students and learning styles while collaborating with faculty to ensure that students get clinical experiences where they get opportunities to evaluate diverse patients (AONE, 2022). Further, they can experience diverse cultural norms and health care practices while designing and implementing culturally competent, linguistically appropriate, and patient-focused and equitable care that responds to diverse patient populations.

The strategies that can drive changes in nursing practice and nursing education to align my organization’s goals with this topic include developing and implementing DEI policies where the organization ensures the workplace values diversity and inclusion, recruiting nurses to cater to patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, and training employees on cultural competence to ascertain that they can accept patients and nurses from different socioeconomic backgrounds (AACN, 2022; Mitchell et al., 2024). Again, the organization should implore nurses to practice evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions where they get patients’ preferences, values, and concerns that they can integrate into plans of care to attain better outcomes (Robinson-Lane et al., 2024). The implication is that these strategies will help the organization to develop a conducive environment for nurses to advance diversity practices at personal and organizational levels to improve care delivery and outcomes.
