Note: This unit will depend on reading and writing about your research informally and formally in a research paper.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to develop a research methodology, to research a topic, and to synthesize your findings. The main purpose is to get you to engage on a different level with an action conducted on the internet and consider it from an ethical standpoint, which might include cultural, economic, medical and/or environmental considerations.
Prompt: In a minimum 6- / maximum 8-page, documented research paper, one that balances research results and your thoughtful commentary, please present your thoughts and findings based on the prompt below.
As this unit explores the ethical dilemmas of keeping lawns as an example, you will do the same with your internet-related topic. Explore an assigned action (three choices will be given and one will be assigned to you) in which people participate.. It is an action people generally like. It has benefits. However, you will reveal underlying issues. Below is a breakdown of this in more detail.
Introduction Paragraph
Body Paragraphs
Part 1: The Origins and the Action
Explain the action. How and when did it come about? what circumstances does it occur today? How often? How has it been helpful, valued or useful? How so?
Part 2: The Underlying Ethical Dilemmas (likely, the larger part of the paper)
What might be unexpected dilemmas related to the practice? Consider the action from the viewpoints that apply: human rights, political impact, public health, economics, environmental impact, social impact, etc.
Conclusion
* Include research in both parts 1 and 2 of the paper.
Requirements
Length: A minimum of 6 complete pages plus a Works Cited page, in MLA style.
Sources Required/Allowed: A minimum of 5 research sources is required.
Web–only resources (Limit of 3). This would mean that this source only appears on the web. It is not a journal, magazine or newspaper that originally appeared in print form and is now on the web. Source domains should be limited to a .gov or a .edu. Use of .orgs should be approved by the instructor. No .coms unless it is a newspaper/magazine (which might not make it a web-only source anymore).
OCC Library Database Sources: magazines, journals, and newspapers. (Although you find these online through our campus databases, these were originally published in hardcopy form.)
Library Books / Reference Materials—e-edition due to library closures.
Essay Basics: Intriguing introduction. The essay may offer the thesis in the introduction, or in the conclusion. The essay will employ focused body paragraphs that address the two parts of the paper. Compelling conclusion.
Writing Style: Incorporate transitions, key words, varied sentence styles, and other devices we have covered.
Rhetorical Style: Incorporate rhetorical questions, analogy and more in order to appeal to logos, ethos and pathos.
Visual: Include one visual (a graph, a timeline, a table), clearly incorporated into the paper and cited. Visuals bigger than ½ a page are fine, but it is expected that the paper will grow to accommodate the large visual.
Source Integration: Demonstrate various methods of research integration. Sources integration–through mostly quotes and some paraphrase–is clearly related to paper ideas. All research is cited.
MLA Documentation: The paper will demonstrate accurate in-text documentation and works cited citations.
Presentation: The paper will demonstrate college-level prose.
Point of View: 3rd person point of view will be used.
Total Points: 325 (Annotated Bibliography is 50. Small Assignment 2 is 50. Paper is 225.)
Warning: Please retain electronic copies of all essays. Any paper suspected of plagiarism will be run through Turnitin.com. Any instance of plagiarism will equal an “F”
