Access to health is defined as the timely use of health services. This access to health can be affected by many causes. I could mention several factors that can influence how people access health services. One aspect that we must consider and is the most important of this discussion is the cultural aspect (Soltani et al.,2017).
Acquiring cultural competence to provide culturally congruent and sensitive care is a task that nursing professionals must undertake. There are various strategies through which the world of our patients can be understood, where research plays a vital role; for example, through ethnographic studies, values, beliefs, and practices can be systematically identified. That is related to health and the care that they perform. In addition, ethnographic research has provided substantial elements to determine health behaviors within a group and the differences between them. The nursing professional’s decisions and care actions will be beneficial and satisfactory for the clients/patients if they are based on evaluating the benefits and risks of beliefs, values , and ways of life(Ibarra et al.,2016).
Among the main cultural barriers, we find cultural and language differences, a lower socioeconomic status, lack of knowledge, and different methods of solving health-related problems. Among these difficulties, I can focus directly on the immigrant population. I can mention the case of patients who celebrate Ramadan where, as we know, a prolonged fast is performed. Based on the Islamic lunar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary each year, but in 2021 it is estimated to be between April 12 and May 11. The exact starting day is officially announced at the moment when the crescent moon of the ninth month (of the traditional Islamic calendar) appears. Ramadan lasts about 30 days, until the sighting of the next crescent moon, before closing the period with Eid al-Fitr, when the fast is broken with a feast. Suppose we as professionals do not know this cultural aspect, and we order the patient to adhere to health practices that violate this fast. In that case, it will be difficult for us to achieve adequate adherence to their treatment. Finally, it is essential to point out that cultural competence promotes the integration of a more balanced person, being able to achieve their own identity. Valuing diversity means accepting and respecting differences between and within cultures.
