MDP505 Monitoring And Evaluation Test
MDP 505 Monitoring and Evaluation
Refugee Resettlement
Students should use the scenario of Afghan Refugee below to construct an evaluation of the organization’s impact.
SCENARIO
MDP505 Monitoring And Evaluation Test
An intern will be working to help the Afghan American Alliance of Georgia (AAAGa) meet the needs of newly arrived Afghan families. Our organization is a newly founded, grassroots effort to augment the work of the resettlement agencies in the Atlanta area. We have discovered that despite the best efforts of resettlement experts, there are substantial gaps in the provision of services for Afghan families as they get their footing in Georgia.
Since our formation 9 months ago, we have helped resettle dozens of families by providing furniture, household items, clothing, shoes, bicycles, sewing machines, toys, and support. We work with families longitudinally so that they feel they have someone they can contact when their needs are not being met. This means doing home visits, taking them food, helping them reach their case workers, arranging doctor’s appointments, and driving them to the store.
We are constantly adding services and refining our processes. We recently formed an Education Team to identify pathways to postsecondary education for Afghans who had their education interrupted by the ascent of the Taliban. This group is also researching options for ESL training that are accessible and affordable.
We have a newly formed Legal Team that is working to help Afghans who are here with Special Immigrant Visas or as humanitarian parolees identify next steps to avoid deportation. This group will also help with housing and labor issues.

A major need is assistance with communication and logistics. We are fortunate to be offered donated goods, and we work hard to find a way to transport items to our storage units, track our inventory and identify the family who needs the items. This means organizing the storage facility and planning distribution days when we deliver items to families.
A new area of need is fundraising and development. We have been fortunate to receive donations so far, but as the world’s attention moves to other humanitarian crises, we will need to highlight the needs of Afghan families in Georgia, who have been displaced and are often struggling to get acclimated to life here.
Based on the above scenario, the student is to prepare a script or the types of questions that should be asked both the Afghan family members and the volunteers to determine how the AAAGa is helping these families. What impact has the organization made, and what are other ways the organization can help the families?
The student should develop key informants, focus group discussion, and interview questions/guides. About 20 – 25 questions.
