Literature is a reflection of the human condition, and all characters represent the values, problems, concerns, attitudes, and ideals of the time in which they are framed. What we know from the study of literature is that humanity is always trying to make sense of the world and justify its place in the world. Today we are still attempting to define our values, solve our problems, address concerns, formulate attitudes, and strive for the ideals in our society.
ASSIGNMENT: In a well-developed essay, choose a theme that you see in Shelley’s novel and ANALYZE it in terms of the way you see it in today’s society.
For example, you might decide that Shelley’s message, one of the themes in the novel, is that individuals fall prey to the “system” that society has constructed, a system that turns good to bad. You might look, then, at the way our own society tampers with the individual who is “different.” Or you might decide that Shelley’s message, one of the themes in the novel, is that humankind needs to be held accountable when it tampers with nature. You might look, then, at the way our own society negatively impacts the “natural.”
Follow these instructions carefully:
Since you have worked with theme in a previous essay, you may choose to use that theme or you may change to a different one.
DO NOT provide more than a one or two paragraph analysis of Shelley’s theme. Be concise with your analysis of her theme.
The focus of the essay is on the way that you view the theme in today’s society, so that needs to be the majority of your essay.
Bring in outside sources to support your discussion of the theme in today’s society, but do so sparingly. The majority of the discussion needs to be your own—and these sources only support your analysis. So no more than 10% of the essay should be support (paraphrases or direct quotes from outside sources). 90% of the essay is your own analysis of the theme in today’s society.
Do not use “I” or “you” in the essay.
I added pictures which contain the passwords that might be required for some databases on the SBVC database website, thank you! Please let me know if you have anytrouble with the databases or assignment
