This week, we have discussed how jails today represent one of the most challenging operations in the nation’s criminal justice process. Jails not only hold more than 700,000 inmates at any one time, but they also admit more than ten times that number per year, hold a wide variety of categories of offenders, house inmates with several unique problems and needs, and must maintain constitutional standards and protect the rights of offenders charged with, yet not convicted of a crime.
The jail incarceration rate has more than doubled, and the population of the nation’s jails has almost tripled over the past twenty years. Select two alternative sanctions that could be used to reduce jail overcrowding and explain why you selected those two sanctions in lieu of incarceration.
