Part A
Students must answer one of the following questions and compose at least a 250 word response. The response should contain a topic sentence that answers the question and unifies the paragraph. If more than one paragraph is used, each paragraph should contain a topic sentence. The response should also include textual evidence from all works of literature used within the answer, follow appropriate in-text citation guidelines, and effectively communicate the answer in paragraph form. Students should consult the example provided here prior to answering the question
Using the works of three authors—one from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s; one from the 1970s and 80s; and one from the 1990s and 2000s—describe the American identity during the Postmodern Period of American Literature. Then, explain how the American identity changed since the beginning of the semester. Utilize textual evidence from all works used to support responses.

Compare the theme of Cheever’s “The Swimmer” with the theme in the works of one of the following authors—Anaya, Walker, Rich, Clifton, Cisneros, or Diaz. What do the similarities and/or differences reveal about American Postmodern society? Provide quotes from the literature used to support responses.
Compare Walker’s characters in “Everyday Use” with the characters in the works of one of the following authors—O’Connor, Anaya, Rich, Clifton, Cisneros, or Diaz. What do these works reveal about the state of the American minority in the mid-to-late 20th Century? Include quotes from each work to support responses.
Choose two symbols from the works of either Clifton, Cisneros, or Diaz and two symbols from the works of Jarrell, O’Connor, Cheever, Anaya, Walker, or Rich. Discuss the importance of each symbol (four symbols total) to the work’s overall theme. Provide textual evidence to give credence to replies.
Using the poetry of Jarrell, Rich, and Clifton, answer the following question. How has the American poetic voice changed since Whitman and Dickinson? What is the significance of that change toward the development of the American identity? Provide textual evidence from all works used in responses.
