In the Business Concept Development discussion earlier this week, you developed an idea for a business that offers a product or service. In Week 1 of the course, we explored the idea of writing for your reader. In this assignment, you will be writing for readers that you don’t know—visitors to a website who are potential customers for your business. You will need to make inferences about who these readers are, what their needs might be, and how to address those needs in your writing. Reflect back on the questions that you considered when developing your business concept earlier this week:
Who are your potential customers?
Why would they be interested in the product or service?
What problem would it solve for them?
Is the customer an individual or another business?
Why would they choose your offering over another one available in the market?
Write:
Write the copy for three pages of a website for your business idea. Since it is a fictional business you are describing, you should feel free to invent details about the service or product and the business team that supports it, although you should try to keep your claims realistic. The more realistic the product or service you are describing, the more this exercise will help you with real-world communication.
Write the copy (text) for the following three types of pages:
Home page
The home page is the first page that visitors will land on when visiting your site. This page should orient the visitor very quickly to what the site is about and what your basic offering is.
“About us” page
The “about us” page describes the business, who works for it, and why they are well positioned to provide the product or service. The point here is to build credibility with potential customers.
Products or services page
The products or services page describes your offerings. Remember to focus on the needs of your customers and how the offering can meet them. Consider benefits as well as features.
In your web copy,
Create a home page that welcomes visitors and orients them quickly to what the site offers,
Create an “about us” page that builds credibility,
Create a products or services page that makes benefits to customers clear and attractive,
Use concise language,
Use appropriate style for the product or service, and
Chunk content appropriately for the web.
The Web Copy for a Product or Service assignment
Must be at least two double-spaced paragraphs in length for each of the three assigned webpage categories.
Web Copy Writing Tips
1.
Write for your reader. Keep in mind who your potential customers are and address how your business will meet their needs and expectations.
2.
Write copy that is easy to scan. You are not required to design the website, but you should think about how your copy might appear on the page. Use short, clear sentences. Avoid long, complex sentences and big block paragraphs. Chunk content so that it would appear visually appealing on a webpage.
3.
Think from the site visitor’s point of view when you’re deciding what content to include. Consider the kind of business you’re creating and the kind of customer it will serve. How much information does your customer want and need? Will information alone drive the purchase decision? What else might drive the customer’s decision-making?
