In each unit, you will complete a “Primary Source Analysis” lesson that dives deeper into a relevant historical topic through the investigation of some form of primary source material. The lesson will introduce you to a type of primary source, provide examples of it from the era considered in each unit, and include related reading materials to help you contextualize it.
You will then complete a brief analysis of the materials that requires you to first consider how and why the type of material was created. You will answer questions such as: Who created the type of materials (characteristics of the individuals and/or occupations, class status, gender/sex, race/ethnicity, etc.)? What was their original purpose and audience? What technology, knowledge, and materials were required to create them? What was their historical context?). You should not simply answer these questions but use these questions to organize and collect your thoughts. Then, you will select one example for a closer examination. Use your example to make an argument about how the example you selected reflects its era, covering both its content and form. The analysis should incorporate information from the unit’s lessons, be approximately one double-spaced page in length (approximately 300 words) and use proper citations.
