I need a 200 word post reply for the following post
Hello class and Dr. Brown, I love that we are finishing up our discussion post with my favorite topic, which are challenges in childhood learning. As stated before in my introduction post, I work as a COTA/L in a Pediatric clinic located in Florida. My day-to-day consists of helping children when they assist in their occupational therapy session by assisting them in successfully completing their everyday activities. As occupational therapists, we help children succeed in their meaningful occupations, which is play, we do therapeutic activities that enable them to increase their play skills. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, it is a persistent pattern of inattention and hyperactivity that interferes with functioning and negatively impacts the individual on social/academic activities (Bélanger, Andrews, Gray, & Korczak, 2018). Children with ADHD might display certain behaviors like educational problems due to the lack of attention and teacher might even negatively reprimand individuals because they aren’t aware of their condition. A typical child might display some outburst or inattention in school however not to the extent of children with ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder or a conduct disorder. Since I work with mostly kids with ASD it teaches you that the “typical way” of doing things might not work for most of the kids in order to achieve the plan of care or target the goals of the child. Many times, I have gone into a session with one of my kids with certain activities picked out to complete. Once the kid gets to the therapy session we have to switch it all around because of some unexpected behavioral outburst. We have to work the whole session in order to regulate the child’s sensory system. Dr. Grandin made a comment regarding how her mother always gave her two choices in order to go to the farm when she didn’t want to, one choice was to go once in the summer or go one day out of the week, this gave Dr. Grandin multiple options. This kind of discipline and early intervention helped Dr. Grandin be the individual she is today.
