Hi Students, For the next few weeks we will be looking at the integumentary sytem and sensory system. For the discussion this week I want you to think about the sensory organs intervated with the integumentary. Now most of you will think immediately that touch is the only only one. However, let’s concentrate on hearing….if the ear and all the skin is not intact near the ear, will your hearing be as fully functional as it should be? If you are missing eyelids from an accident or fire, would your sight not be affected? If our tongue was affected and our lips by something like a cleft palate would taste be the same? If our nose had a deviated septum or skin challenges would our sense of smell be affected?
Now think about some of the patients you have had or the patients you may encounter in the acute care setting. Imagine a patient with one of the challenges I have discussed. YOUR choice. I want you to really describe your patient. Tell us what they look like. Tell us how they are coping with this challenge. Then think about how you will write a care plan that affects your integumentary and sensory systems. Write that care plan, use the SIM chart work as your template, however you only have to concentrate on the sensory and integumentary system. **** PLEASE site your sources and send me the links.
