GORDON RULE WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Philosophy, Religion, and Humanities Students
Be sure that you have satisfied the necessary English composition requirements for the Gordon Rule.
Write a paper of 250 – 500 words (two page paper.) The paper must be typed (12 point), double-spaced with standard width margins, and in WORD.
1. Professor will make two articles available to you.
You will write a review/response to one of the two articles and incorporate something of the other article into your review.
“10 Examples That Prove White Privilege Exists in Every Aspect Imaginable – Yes! Magazine”
“The fallacy of white privilege — and how it’s corroding society”

2. Review/response should address the following:
-What question/issue does the article address?
-What is the writer’s main thesis?
– What information is relevant to the article’s main thesis and to coming to its conclusion?
-What are the key concept(s) that are explicitly stated or that are implicit in the article?
– What assumptions are expressed in or referred to in the article?
-What are the assertions or arguments that the writer uses to support the main thesis?
-Does the article express any implications(s)? If so, what are those implications?
-What implications do you perceive?
3. Review/response should reflect the materials from your writing/composition course(s) (e.g., grammar). Should you need direction, I recommend the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Kate Turabian’s Manual for Writers, and/or Strunk & White’s Elements of Style.
4. Must use an academically acceptable method (e.g., endnotes) for properly citing quotations.
5. When referring to an author do not do so using only the first name of the author.
6. In the body of the paper, do make mention of the title of the article that you are reviewing.
7. At liberty to use singular pronouns (e.g., she, he). Nonetheless, be sure that you use a plural pronoun (e.g., they) should your subject be plural.
8. Review/response must manifest informed beliefs and reasoned arguments. It cannot be a mere emotional response or gut reaction. While we can acknowledge the role and importance of emotions and visceral reactions, there is another approach to the issues addressed or raised in philosophy and religion. This other approach is one that uses the faculties and gifts of the mind.
9. On your review include the following information:
-Your name
-The course
-The day(s) and the meeting time the course meets
-The semester/term
10. Grading:
-For an excellently written review/response (i.e., one that satisfies all of the above), you will receive 20 points.
-For a review/response that does not wholly satisfy all of the above, but satisfies most of the above, you will receive 17 points.
-For a review/response that does not wholly satisfy all of the above, but satisfies a fair amount of the above, you will receive 14 points.
-For a review that is poorly written (i.e., satisfies little or nothing of the above), you will receive 1 point.
