Given the impact genetics and genomics has on many of our societal practices, you are likely to come across articles, websites, and other media references to various applications of genomics on a regular basis. Some of these will report fact as they are, some will be controversial, others will make promises or predict catastrophes. How will you decide if these media representations are reliable? As an engaged and informed citizen, how will you decide if the application discussed is of benefit to the society? How will you decide if (or under what circumstances) you will be comfortable with the application?
For this assessment task, you will be evaluating and critiquing a media representation and the application of genetics/genomics in a real-life scenario. A list of media resources that you can select from is provided underneath and you will just need to review one of them. You should also refer to at least two other resources to help you understand the context of the application and the issue being addressed, apart from the chosen media piece. This is an opportunity for you to combine the knowledge and skills you have gained from the course so far and apply it to a relevant contemporary issue. You can apply the concepts and information covered in mini-lectures, learning activities, the activity on genomic testing technologies and of course the skills covered in the discussion forum activities when completing this task.
Topic: Unmasking the Golden State Killer: dark investigation into Joseph DeAngelo – Video
Warning – The related content may be disturbing to some individuals.

Note that not all points will be relevant to all of the media resources, and you are not limited to addressing the points provided. You should rather use them as a guide to structure a thorough and insightful evaluation relevant to the issue and context being discussed.
1- Introduction and the validity of the resource (4 Marks)
• Briefly describe the application.
• Identify which broader area/s of genetic/genomic applications it belongs to (e.g., GMOs/gene
editing, conservation, forensics, genetic testing etc.)
• Do you think the article/media is a valid source of information? Why do you think so?
• Does the author provide an unbiased opinion? Is their stance on the matter clear?
2- Impact of the application on the society (4 Marks)
• Who are the stakeholders and what are their perspectives – as discussed in the article and if there
are others who you think should be considered?
• How are each of these groups likely to be affected?
3- Positive aspects of the application (4 Marks)
• If any, what are the positive aspects of the application discussed in the article (both from a scientific
and sociocultural/ELSI point of view)? Describe in detail.
• Can you think of any more positive aspects that are not mentioned (both from a scientific and
sociocultural/ELSI point of view)? Discuss in detail.
• What advancements can this lead to? (e.g., How else can this be used, in what other context/s? etc.)
4- Negative aspects of the application (4 Marks)
• If any, what are the potential negative impacts of the application discussed in the article (both from
a scientific and sociocultural/ELSI point of view)? Describe in detail.
• Can you think of any more negative aspects that are not mentioned (both from a scientific and
sociocultural/ELSI point of view)? Discuss in detail.
5- Conclusion (4 Marks)
• Based on your evaluation, do you think this particular application is of benefit to the society? Discuss
in detail.
a. If you think yes, why?
• Are there any measures that can be taken to further ensure safety and efficacy of
the application and make it more ethical? Who’s responsibility is it?
b. If you think no, why not?
• Are there any changes to the process that can be introduced to make it acceptable?
Who’s responsibility is it?
c. If you have mixed opinions, support your arguments appropriately.
Other criteria
6 – Overall presentation and communication (3 Marks)

audience.
• For essay format- Clear and concise communication with no spelling or grammatical errors.
• For video format- Clear communication and audible speech. Any visual aids used should support the
point/s being communicated.
7 – Referencing* (2 Marks)
• All sources you have used while completing this assessment should be referenced using an
appropriate referencing style. E.g., APA, Harvard (should include in-text referencing along with a
