Start each question on a new page. Insert automatic page numbering in the upper right header. Double-space the text. Start a new paragraph (indent first line with a tab) when you shift to a new topic. Do not use extra spacing between paragraphs. Use one-inch margins on all 4 sides of the page. Use Times New Roman #12 font. Do not use outside research, only the textbook. Do not go over page limits.
Start paragraphs on a topic sentence and keep paragraphs focused on one topic each. Carefully proofread and read-aloud a draft to fix fuzzy ideas and awkward sentences, and to delete needless words, phrases, and sentences, all of which are the Road to Destruction. Misspelled words and informal speech will be considered intolerably careless. Be sure to have fun; a lack of fun and excitement will be seen as incomparably disappointing.
E-mail the finished exam as a Microsoft Word or RTF attached document.

(1) If the pessimists are right and there is no fundamental meaning of life nor a purpose for the universe, how would an existentialist (such as Sartre) convince them that life is worth living?
(2) A hobby defined here is some pursuit that a person does in leisure time and does not add significantly to that person’s income. One person has a hobby such as coin collecting, and another has a hobby building large metal sculptures that are given away to anyone who will set them up in a front yard. Can you say that either of their hobbies is better than the other in expressing a meaning of life? Hint: there is no right answer; the best way to answer this is to explain your answer convincingly.
(3) Construct your own question about the meaning of life and answer it by referring to at least two of the philosophers of Chapter 9 as well as your own interpretation of their ideas.
