For this submission, I would like you to read, cite, and annotate TWO academic-journal articles focusing on subjects related to our study of Hillbilly Elegy.
One article should focus on early education during years K-6 (perhaps focusing on some of the barriers students face when they don’t have support at home). Vance shares quite a bit about his early education, how he struggled with confidence, the fact that he had very little support at home (including resources for success), yet despite this, he would often cringe at the thought of having to go back home once the school day ended.
One article should be related to substance abuse – particularly the Opioid epidemic that pervades not only the Appalachian community, but what has become an increasing problem across the United States. Vance describes not only his mother’s addiction to drugs (various), but also details, in part, how the opioid epidemic adds to issues related to abuse, family trauma, and even the “learned helplessness” quotient that stagnates his community. So, just as in the example below, please formally cite (complete citation) and annotate your chosen article – citation on top, annotation directly below. You are still required to include all of the proper components for each citation, i.e article title, journal title, volume/issue number, etc.
Particulars:
Adhering to MLA format, please cite both articles as you would on a Works Cited page of an essay (or annotated bib), but then also provide an annotation for each that you would create for an annotated bibliography. One of my previously embedded tutors (from our CCC tutorial center) was kind enough to demonstrate the citation and annotation process for this assignment and created the sample submission you see below. Use it as a model for your submission.
Remember, an article annotation (the same type of annotation you wrote for the annotated bibliography for the Problem/Solution essay) should summarize the source (4-5 sentences) and assess / evaluate its effectiveness (4-5 sentences). Because this article is not (at this point) an one you plan to reference in an specific essay, you do not need to include a statement of intent which would briefly explain how and why you plan to reference the article in your corresponding essay. Therefore, your entire annotation for this assignment should be seven sentences or less.
