For this assignment, you will create a layout grid (a.k.a. wireframes), which allows you to focus on the design of a document without emphasizing the content. While content and design certainly work together, layout grids help you to imagine how content might appear on a page. Document design is so important: it improves an audience’s ability to access and understand information.
For this activity, you will create a layout grid. You can either find something that you would like to redesign (think a page from an instruction set or a page from a website) with a focus on the layout, or you can create a layout grid related to your instructions assignment (for this option, choose part of your instructions, not the entire instruction set). Consider how the layout and document design will help your audience access and understand information. Consider how to organize information so that there is a clear hierarchy, so that you emphasize alignment, consistency, contrast, and proximity.You can begin by sketching a better design for the document, then use lines, shapes, text boxes, etc. in Word (or a software program of your choice–you can even do this using pencil and paper and upload a picture of your grid) to create a new and improved layout. Include a short description in which you explain the principles you used from ITPC to improve the design.
