For Paper, you will pick any three required readings from Weeks 6-9, and one external source. You can use more than one chapter from the same book. You can only use readings from the assigned time period for each paper mentioned above. All readings must be academic/scholarly (such as, book, book chapter, peer-reviewed journal articles). Articles from magazines/websites, such as the New Yorker or Slate do not count as academic. Book reviews or any articles below 5 pages in length do not count. Any review of sources outside these criteria will be assessed out of half of the possible points.
To find an external academic/scholarly source, you can begin by picking several keywords of your choice from the weekly course module. Then follow the instructions here: What is UW Libraries Search and how do I use it to find resources?Links to an external site. You may also find that each required course reading mentions some important works in it. You can try to use UW Library or Google Scholar to check if they are accessible. If you still need additional help with finding academic sources, please schedule an appointment with Jessica AlbanoLinks to an external site. (Communication Studies Librarian) in advance. If you need help with the paper, please contact us at least a week in advance of the paper due date so you can benefit from our advice.
To write a good review paper, try writing in your own words and paraphrase from academic materials instead of extensively copy-pasting from the readings and lecture/reading review slides. All paraphrased content must be cited with the relevant page number. See an example of a ‘legitimate paraphrase (Links to an external site.)’ here. Any use of “direct quotes” should be limited to 20% of the review, short in length, and accompanied by a page number from the original source, if available. Do not risk plagiarizing. Everything that is not an original thought from you must be cited. Please make sure that all in-text citations are in APA format (Links to an external site.) (e.g. Winner, 1980, p. 122). Due to the large class size, we are unable to provide any feedback on early drafts. If you have any queries about the paper, visit the TA during office hours. If you need support with writing, please consult with UW Writing Centers (Links to an external site.) in advance.
Please note: Incomplete submission = no submission = 0 marks. Wrong file = no submission = 0 marks. Also note: Device or internet malfunction is not an acceptable excuse for late submission or submission failure. Consider a cloud-based storage system for writing papers, like OneDrive or Google Docs, if you are concerned about your computer malfunctioning.
Detailed Grading Rubric for the Course Papers (25 points). The weight of this assignment is 20% of your course grade. For the convenience of review we will grade it with 25 points. The review task is similar to an Annotated Bibliography (see samples (Links to an external site.)). You are required to review your chosen academic sources in roughly 300 words each, excluding references. Please use this detailed grading rubric below to structure your paper.
