Final Research Paper Topic: Colonial Legacies
For your final research paper, you will be looking closely into the legacies of imperialism in one part of the world, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). There are three stages to this project and the first stage was developing a thesis statement and outline (due Friday, 4/15 at 5pm). The second stage (due on May 13) was selecting a secondary source (i.e., an academic article) that supports your thesis and writing an analysis of that secondary source as part of the final paper. The final paper is due by 5pm on Friday, June 10th – papers will be submitted through Turnitin software at the tab labeled SUBMIT FINAL PAPERS HERE on Blackboard.
Paper Requirements:
Your final paper must meet the following requirements:
Be 6-10 pages typed and double spaced. Please use a standard 12-point font with regular 1-inch margins.
Papers must be in a .docx, .doc, or .pdf format (note that .pages documents are not readable to me and cannot be graded).
Papers must include a minimum of three citations in a Works Cited list at the end of the paper. Two of these sources must be secondary sources from the below “Articles for Final Paper” list, and one source must be a primary source (that is, produced in the time/place being discussed). Please have both “Secondary Sources” and “Primary Sources” sections in your Works Cited list.
Citations must be listed in MLA format. For guidance on proper citation format (including both in-text citations and for the Works Cited list) please click on the MLA tab on this library help page.
You must build your paper around one of these two theses – one of these two thesis statements should appear in your first paragraph:
OPTION 1: The actions being taken by the United States and China in the Democratic Republic of Congo today could be considered “neo-colonialism” because they closely mirror the actions of colonial European powers in Africa in the 19th-20th centuries.
Articles for final paper (Secondary sources)
While this is not a comprehensive list of all the sources you can use for this paper, it is a curated list of appropriate sources for use in this project. In the final paper, you must use and properly cite at least two secondary sources from this list and at least one primary source. Note that a primary source can be embedded within a secondary source, for example a direct quote from someone involved in the cobalt industry (cited in one of the below secondary sources) or an image/photo that you find in a book or textbook. JSTOR also has a good image search function.
1) “The Global Race to Mine the Metal of the Future” New York Times Daily podcast, March 18, 2022 (this was the original secondary source you heard, the link contains the podcast and a transcript of the podcast)
