Case Scenario: Organizationally, you are the official, local county
elections administrator, and have been for approximately 15 years. The top
elected county official has asked you to conduct a recount on the most recent
election. The election results were as follows: 1700 votes (58.62%) for Party X
and 1200 votes (41.38%) for Party Z, down the ballot and along party lines for
each contest. The top elected county official has called you into his/her
office, and asks you to find votes as well as deduct votes so that Party Z can
be declared and certified as the winner of this election for your county.
In 15 years of being the county elections administrator, you have never been
asked to conduct this type of ballot box recount for the county’s voters. If
you do NOT do this recount, the top elected county official tells you that s/he
will ask for your resignation letter. In this case, what should or would you
do? In diagnosing this organizational behavior, discuss this behavior that this
county government organization is exhibiting, and how you would navigate this
situation that you are facing as the county elections administrator? Be
specific as to how you would handle or conduct yourself in light of this
circumstance? Also discuss: What impact your decision may have on the
organization’s integrity in terms of electoral legitimacy of your county’s
