Explain how this is supposed to work, and why it doesn’t.
Each question needs to be answered in two pages.
Each question should be structured like a normal paper, focused essentially on reconstructing and
explaining one philosophical argument, and the philosophical theories relevant to that
argument. You need to state those theories precisely and explain them in as much detail. The same
goes for the premises of the argument—you need to explain if it’s a good argument and why.
8) By “reconstructing the argument” (listing the premises, etc.), I mean essentially that you must be
able to (a) describe the structure of the reasoning, (b) what motivates each step, and (c) how each
step leads to the next.
9) Make sure to have proper references throughout your questions for everything you use in any way
and a bibliography at the end—concerns about plagiarism apply just as with any other paper.
The same warning about the unreliability of online material applies—be careful! It’s probably best
to use mostly class material and class readings!
The questions are:
A)Explain Descartes’ Evil Demon Argument and how it succeeds in undermining all knowledge.
B)Given Putman’s Semantic Externalism about the meaning of words, the words use now have different meanings than if you were to use these same words while being the victim of an Evil Demon, and this can help rule out that you are deceived by an Evil Demon. Explain how this is supposed to work, and why it doesn’t.
